LSEM welcomed Matilda into our program when she entered kindergarten. At first, she was a shy girl who had difficulty recognizing letters and hearing the beginning sounds in words. Matilda had not attended preschool prior to kindergarten and was performing behind her peers. Linda Schumacher began working with her twice a week to provide support.
We utilized the Lexia Reading program to help Matilda grow her reading skills. After several weeks in our LSEM program, Matilda slowly began to come out of her shell. As she learned more letters and sounds, her confidence soared. She readily shouted out answers to questions and began talking about all kinds of things that interested her.
As the year progressed she learned all the letters of the alphabet, both upper and lower case. Not only could she hear the beginning sounds in words, she also could hear ending sounds and middle sounds too. By the end of the year, Matilda was reading consonant-vowel-consonant words!
Linda gave her beginning of first grade level work and she was able to complete it with ease. As Matilda entered first grade, she was able to stay within the classroom and be successful. It’s always a success story when LSEM is able to prepare and equip a child with the the skills and tools to be successful on their own.
