Summer Practice and Fall Success

As I started the new year, I was hopeful that students had retained some of the skills that they had worked so hard on during the previous grade.  I have two fourth grade girls that really struggled with math concepts and facts during third grade but both had committed to working hard to understand and do better.  We worked very hard last year on money skills and multiplication facts.  By the end of the third grade year, their test scores and NWEA score, which measures academic progress, had gone up and they were able to see success with their commitment to a little extra work during the week.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had done the activities I had sent home over the summer and were ready to start the new year.  One of the girls had increased her math score during third grade by 23 points!!  Her fall NWEA showed a fall of 6 points, but even though she was disappointed that it dropped, we were able to talk about how it truly was a success and that her practice made a huge difference.  The other student had a 15 point increase by the end of third grade and only dropped 1 point on the fall fourth grade NWEA.  She was very proud of herself to have maintained the skills she needed.  It was wonderful to join them in celebrating their learning and I am so very proud of their determination to practice and do better!  I can’t wait to see the continued progress they have in fourth grade.
