During this school year one of my responsibilities is to be a one of LSEM’s regional coordinators. My favorite duty in this capacity is my two visits to each of the teachers in my region. I sit in amazement as I watch our teachers in action. The love that these teachers have for their students is evident. They are truly the hands and feet of Jesus. They work tirelessly planning and preparing lessons for their students. I watch as they teach their lessons, making modifications on the spot when they see that their students need something different to achieve maximum learning that day.
This year I watch as they patiently wait for their students to be ready to learn. I watch as they change the presentation of their lesson from an in-person delivery to one that is virtual. I watch as they take notes on the progress their students made for the day. Best of all, I watch as they celebrate successes with their students. I watch as teachers pray with their students, sing Christian songs with their students, and talk about what it means and looks like to follow Jesus.
This year has not been an easy year to be a teacher. This is especially true for the LSEM teacher. With the pandemic, many students have fallen behind and schools are looking at their LSEM teacher for guidance and assistance. I have watched as caseloads have soared, but our teachers have handled it perseverance and grace.
In a normal year, LSEM teachers take pride in knowing that their work allows students to know the blessing of attending a Lutheran school. This year, I think we all have learned to not take for granted the opportunity to work and learn in a Christ-centered environment.
