Acting to Improve Reading

Last year a student and I read and acted out a play together.  This student, who went from sounding out many words and had difficulty with comprehension, was now excited to read her part.  Knowing she was a character and not herself, allowed her to open up and shine.

We read through it a couple times and then acted it out with make-believe and simple props.  This student, who had not been able to read for understanding, was now reading with expression and having fun!

I am incorporating plays into my reading intervention classes this year as well.  The excitement the students have when they get to act it out is so fun to witness.  These reluctant readers can hardly wait to go from reading the script to acting.
