It Works!
D is a student who was new to the school in 2022-23. She entered second grade and was struggling to read and could only read a few sight words. I began working with D immediately. One of the resources I had her use was the Lexia Reading program. D was most excited to use the Lexia Reading program. She would work hard to complete various activities and was thrilled whenever she would level up in the program. In her mind, she viewed Lexia more as a game than a learning tool to help teach her how to read. As the year progressed, she learned how to decode words using phonics skills that were reinforced in the Lexia Reading program. She was thrilled to realize that she could read lots of words and sentences. Soon, she was reading books on her own.
When this school year began, I performed Acadience testing on all my students. When D came in to take the test, she proudly told me that she read A LOT over the summer, excitedly sharing the titles of the books she had read. As we began testing, I was amazed by how well she was doing. I thought back to where she had been only a year ago when I initially tested her. What a difference a year had made! D went from being a non-reading student to a student who enjoys reading. Moreover, she met the reading benchmarks for a student beginning third grade. Later, after messaging the news of D’s improvement to her parents, her mom replied, “Mrs. S. Thank you so, so much for all of your help with my sweet girl. You have changed our lives more than you know. We are forever grateful for your help.”
