“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” – Galatians 6:9
B is a very responsible third grader, and he gives his best effort when it comes to schoolwork. Unfortunately, there are aspects of school that have not been easy for him. Reading and writing are to him as difficult and complex as a foreign language. B and I have been working together since second grade, meeting four times a week. Since that time, we have been engaged in learning foundational skills and sight words.
First and second grade were very difficult for him. He gave one hundred percent in effort but got very little in return. In first grade, he learned letters and their sound, but he was unable to blend the sounds into words. There was some growth in second grade, but not much. Still, he kept coming every day, and working hard without giving up. Things started slow in third grade, but little by little, reading words turned into phrases and then sentences. Before either one of us even noticed, B was engaging with what he was reading. He independently began reading his tests, reading passages, and comprehension questions. This year things started to click, and B has become an active participant in his learning.
These last years I have been trying to help B narrow the gap between what he is able to do on his own and grade curriculum level expectations. At the same time, B has been teaching me a lesson on perseverance, to never give up.
