I began working this fall at Zion Lutheran School in Bay City, Michigan. This is a new program, so everything is new to me and to my students. I have been very encouraged by the attitude of the students and their desire to receive help and improve.
I have seen my two first graders really catch on to reading! I have seen a face light up when a student finally gets a passing grade on her spelling test. I have been encouraged by students asking if they can work with me when they need extra help on math. I have been able to help older students organize their thoughts so they can complete writing assignments.
Even though I am not there every day, I can see the growth and appreciation in my students. When I hear one student say, “I’m glad you’re able to help me”, and other tell me, “I wish you were here more often”, I know I am doing my job. I am very appreciative of the opportunity to work with these students. Seeing a smile on their faces (actually imagining it since they wear masks), and seeing their reading and math improve, makes this program so rewarding, and I thank God for this opportunity daily.
