Causing a Culture Shift

Starting an LSEM resource room with a new partnership school can have a slow start. Sometimes, it’s a matter of creating awareness with the other teachers in the school, making sure they know how LSEM can help their students with learning needs and their general education classrooms. And sometimes it’s just a result of human resistance to change.

in the 2019-2020 school year, LSEM gained a new partnership with First Lutheran School in Torrance, CA. We are excited to be working with First Lutheran to serve the special education needs of their student body. We welcomed Cathy Roohan to our ranks who is our teacher out there.

Cathy reports that partnering with LSEM has been a “culture shift” for faculty, parents, and students at First Lutheran. She has been impressed with how open everyone has been to the changes. Before LSEM partnered with the school, there was only a single teacher who did some reading interventions. The general education teachers were used to handling their own students with learning challenges. Now, LSEM is in place and we are providing resources and a network of support. As a result, children who require additional help are getting their needs directly addressed and it creates a better balance for the students, teachers, and school.

One mother was so pleased with LSEM that she posted the Welcome Letter she received from Stacy Hoeft to her own private Facebook page, saying “Kudos to Cathy and LSEM!”

That is the reaction we love to see at a new partner school!
