Technology Opening Doors of Communication

Our LSEM teacher Mrs. Gettings teaches two students with autism in Yuma, AZ. These two students have limited expressive language. She has found that through technology, she can give these students the ability to communicate as she works for the most inclusive class possible for them.

Knowing how smart the two boys are and how much they can contribute to a class discussion, teacher questioning, and small group discussion, we have implemented the use of an iPad to provide an outlet for discussion. Auditory processing is very challenging for these boys. By giving them an iPad and using visuals, as well as a language program, they are able to be included in class discussions and questioning by typing what is in their heads.

When supplied with an iPad these children can type their answers out, giving them a way to communicate with the class. Just being able to type answers has helped show Mrs. Gettings, their paraprofessional, homeroom teacher, and parents how much they can contribute to the class.  By using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), these students are making gains in communication both academically and socially.

Mrs. Gettings commented, “These students have a lot to say, and with technology, they are now able to communicate. That is a definite Wow!”

Mrs. Gettings uses an eye tracking device called “Eyegaze”with her own son, Carter, pictured above. Carter is non-verbal and has Spasitic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy (which means he has lost most of the use of his whole body). This technology offers a way to access a computer or communication aid that you control with your eyes. Carter is also a student at Yuma Lutheran School. Carter can control his eyes and uses an Accent 1200 as his voice, which is accessed through Eyegaze. He uses his eyes to point to pictures that represent speech, or a word he wants to say. The AAC device says the words once his eyes dwell on the picture. By using this device Carter is learning to communicate.
