There Are Spiders in Her Office!

One of my favorite reading units to teach 2nd graders is understanding steps in a process.  I have a series of five short story books that are great for teaching this skill.  These books depict children and parents in several activities involving sequence of events.  These activities include carving pumpkins, making pizza, squeezing lemonade, baking bread, and making cheese.  The books are informative, and kids enjoy them.

As a culminating activity, I write the steps to making peanut butter, cracker, and pretzel spiders on the white board.  The students must follow the steps as written to make the spiders.  It is an enjoyable activity which reinforces that reading and following the steps in the correct order is important.

The best part of this activity is when the students burst into their classroom claiming that spiders have invaded my office!  They then proceed to share those spiders with their classmates.
