Long Lasting Effects

As LSEM teachers, we often worry about students who are referred to us. Can they attend, can they understand directions, can they express their needs, name letters, recall letter sounds, read words, comprehend what they read, know numbers, compute calculations, solve word problems, write letters, words, sentences, and paragraphs. How are they socially? What are their emotional needs? The list changes as the student becomes older, but there are many important things we should be concerned about. What can be my impact upon this student and his/her family?

My name is Mrs. Lapsansky and I have been at Trinity Lutheran School in Tinley Park, IL for the past 22 years. Just recently a family sent me a message through the “grapevine”.  Tell Mrs. L thank you. My grandson finished college and became a nurse. Another student sent a message that after finishing high school, he attended an art school and is displaying his artwork in galleries across the country. A mother told me that her son attended a trade school and has expertise in repairing vintage Mustang cars. Of course, there are many more stories that I am unaware of.

I love hearing all the stories about my students over the years.  It really makes me realize that being a LSEM teacher is much more than just teaching phonetic sounds and math flashcards. It is about modeling religious values, being a good human being, which are life-long skills and are much more far reaching.
