What A Teacher Longs For

With kids who struggle to read, your hope as a teacher is that one day they learn to love books and love reading. You show your excitement about books, you share books, read books in a funny voice only to hope they develop a passion for reading.

Last school year, I had four 5th grade students who have found a passion for a book and are loving reading. So much so, that when one of the members of the group was absent, they lead the entire discussion about what he had missed the day before. I sat in my chair, not having to say one word. They told every detail, described the character’s house, what the characters were thinking and even predicted what they thought was going to happen next.

It was an AHA moment for me! Everything they had practiced in the past 3 years was right there in front of me, all of their hard work was paying off. It was beautiful! This is what every teacher longs for!
