Teaching in a Virtual Landscape

Many teachers have been teaching virtually to keep their students active and learning during school closings and social distancing. We really should applaud our teachers – all teachers, everywhere. This was sprung on them with little to no warning, and they have been incredibly innovative and resourceful. Thank a teacher this week for their amazing work during this time of upheaval.

Our LSEM teachers have been working hard on continuing their lessons to help students who have learning needs. Our teacher, Becky, has been sharing her lessons through YouTube. She records herself giving her lessons, and has added a few things to keep kids engaged and the lesson interesting. Her video lessons also include an opening prayer and a clip of a worship song. She has added a joke section and even has a daily “costume” that she puts on. Every lesson she will wear a different costume, and has different “guests” on the table – in the video screenshot she has her construction worker costume on and has Lego people as her table guests.

Our teachers are helping each other as they are able. Nothing is perfect, but our teachers are still putting themselves out there and doing whatever they can to help their students. Becky says, “I hope to make the students’ work from home more palatable for them.” I know that Becky’s sentiment is the hope for all our teachers. They want to make this transitional time as easy as possible for their students, especially because our kids often need that sense of structure and repetition.
