Starting on an Active Note

LSEM supports students in many ways. Without even realizing it, students can be supported with spiritual support, sensory integration support, basic skills, and organizational support.

The Resource Program at Our Savior Lutheran School in Grad Rapids supports Ross four times per week. He comes to the room at the beginning of each day, soon after the daily matins.

We begin our time with Ross doing a gross motor activity, such as jumping on the mini-trampoline, bouncing a ball, or shooting baskets. He warms up this way, either practicing his math facts or simply chatting with me regarding what’s currently important to him. It’s great to see how his overall demeanor seems to improve as he jumps, shoots, or bounces.

We move to reviewing his memory work for the week, discussing it’s meaning and how it may apply to Ross or the world around him.

Then we review his assignments for the week and he enters his math homework into his assignment notebook as well.

Most of Ross’ time is spent on the math lesson for the week. He practices the daily lesson, then works on some review and he’s on his own to complete the homework.

Ross is thankful for the opportunity to begin most of his days in the Resource Program at Our Savior. “I come in in the morning and I’m tired,” he days. “Coming in this room, I get going at a good speed.”
