Philippians 1:12-14, “Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.”
When the Apostle Paul wrote these words to the Philippians, he was a prisoner. Being imprisoned would cause many to give up or become bitter because of the present circumstance. Paul saw this as an opportunity to spread the Good News of Christ. The Spirit showed him that his current situation was not as important as how he would respond to it. He turned a bad situation into something good by proclaiming the Gospel of Christ in prison to all. He witnessed to the prison guards, to the Roman soldiers and the result of this, he encouraged those Christians who were afraid of persecution. Paul was led by the Spirit and demonstrated his faith in spite of the situation. We may not be in prison, but we will have many opportunities that will challenge and maybe even discourage us. How we act in these situations shows others what we believe. God has given us the wisdom to know that through it all He will be with us. Paul tells us in verse 14, “Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.” The result of Paul’s imprisonment is that he encouraged others by his example to courageously and fearlessly proclaim the Gospel of Christ. God gives us those same opportunities today. Pray that He will allow us to be an encouragement to others. Amen.
