I have a student – a first grader – who came to me in the fall only knowing 13 of her letters and letters sounds. She has put a lot of time and energy into practicing and growing her knowledge and now she confidently knows 21 of her letters and letter sounds! She is so excited to demonstrate her knowledge and has been starting to blend letters together to read CVC words on her own. We are both eager to see how she’ll continue to grow throughout the year!

I have a second-grade student who has made great gains with his reading. In August he was sounding out every letter of every word. He struggled with his phonics and scored well below on the nonsense word fluency. He and I have been practicing his fluency and phonics and now he is a much more fluent reader. He is at benchmark on the nonsense word fluency. It is very rewarding!

My WOW for this year is the growth of my 4th-grade reading group. This school year, we have studied many spelling patterns for the 44 sounds in the English language. These two students have shown a lot of growth in reading. They are reading text with multisyllabic words with high accuracy and are comprehending what they are reading. They are also applying the learned spelling patterns to their writing. These students are also more confident readers and often read their assessments without any assistance when they come to the Learning Center to take tests. I am very proud of them.
