Amazing Love

Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord. Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! – Psalm 32: 10-11

What an amazing gift God gives us – to be surrounded by His unfailing love. The cliché says that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. That may or may not be true. On one side, there are few emotions in life that can compete with the feeling of being in love. Conversely, losing a loved one can leave you feeling extreme grief and despair. The real question that this phrase forces us to face is this: Is love worth the risk? Asking a person on a date, sharing your true feelings, placing your heart into the hands of another; these actions put us in a vulnerable position. If they respond positively, you’re able to build a relationship. If they don’t share your feelings, you’ll feel a sense of rejection. If only we could find someone to whom we can open our hearts without fear of being turned aside.

Thankfully, we can.

There can be no greater love than that which God holds for us. We are His dearly loved children, receiving the gifts of our Father with the same total thanks and love that a small child will give to her parents. In fact, His love for us is so great, we never have to question it in any way. He is always with us, always available to listen to our thoughts, and always desiring what is best for us in all things.

It isn’t hard for a believer to rejoice in the greatness of God. He is doing amazing things in our lives, and we should give Him thanks and praise for that. Even if I opened my eyes this morning and found myself feeling lost or afraid, I still would have given thanks and praised His name. The reaction is the same because the blessings are the same. This may sound strange, but in fact, it makes sense. In times of plenty, God is the source. In times of want, God still takes care of all our needs, providing paths through the wilderness and streams in the desert to sustain us. Even in our most dire situations, God provides us with comfort and strength. He forgives our sinfulness through Jesus, and He builds our faith in Him by His Holy Spirit. God has done all of this out of his boundless love for us, not because we are so desirable or have earned it in any way.

In times of trouble or joy, let us always give thanks and rejoice in our God. May our words be our witness that others may see Him through us and come to know this amazing love in their lives as well.
